A common complaint of office workers is that their work environment is too cold. Sometimes the heat is not high enough in the winter or the air conditioning system is working overtime in the summer. Consider some of the reasons why today’s offices have such low temperatures.

A Cold Environment Keeps Employees Alert and Productive
This is a popular theory believed by many office managers and business owners. However, there is no solid proof that a cold office lends to the productivity of workers. In fact, if an employee is constantly trying to keep warm he or she may not be able to concentrate on office work.

Keeping the Thermostat Low in the Winter Saves on the Utility Bill
Today, many office managers are trying to save money anywhere in the budget. By keeping the temperature low in an office, a business can save money on the monthly utility bill. Some office managers even install a lock on the thermostat to keep employees from adjusting it to suit their preferences. Maintaining a cold office environment can save money, but the office manager may lose some valuable employees in the process.

An Old Building with Poor Insulation
A manager may have nothing to do with the cold environment of an office. Offices that are in older buildings are often cold in the winter because of the poor insulation. In addition, an older building may not have energy efficient windows or an energy efficient heating and cooling system. All of these factors add up to a cold office environment. With some updated facilities, the environment could become comfortable for employees.

The Owner of the Office Prefers a Cold Work Environment
The employees in an office may not have much say in the temperature of the environment. If the owner of an office prefers to work with the air conditioning cranked-up, employees may just have to deal with it. Of course, if the employees are in agreement about wanting a warmer office they can approach the office owner with their request. The answer to the request depends on the flexibility of the office owner.

Offices with Lots of Foot Traffic Can Be Cold in the Wintertime
A busy office with a door that leads out onto the sidewalk or the street will likely be cold. Just imagine the cold outside air that rushes in whenever visitors enter or exit the office. With several people entering and leaving the office in the course of an hour it’s almost impossible for the office to maintain an average temperature. An office owner can help this problem by installing a second set doors leading outside.

Peter Wendt is a freelance article writer.  Sometimes he likes to go to coffee shops or libraries to get inspiration.  He has noticed that it gets pretty cold in those buildings and always remembers to bring a sweater with him.  He recommends going to www.airconditioningaustinservice.com for the best air conditioning services.

I haven’t worked in a single place where they got the temperature right – either too cold or too warm. I’ve concluded that each one has a different tolerance level. One learns to adjust. I have a cardigan permanently in my bag.

I don’t have these problems anymore, my home office is usually the warmest in the house… and I recently moved my desk so I can sit right next to it. I used to hate working in cold offices, just made me want to go home straight away. 🙂

I dont accept with the fact that the cooling environment helps the employee to concentrate much in their work, because it only distracts his working mood as he would be shivering with the cool effect and will be continuously trying to make himself warm by some or other means.

Accuracy and productivity goes down in a cold office environment (or home office) according to a Cornell study. Here’s a brand new unique product to keep both hands warm while using the computer (works on laptops too). Ra-Key is a Radiant Keyboard, Mouse and Desktop heater using only 400 watts making it energy efficient. It’s available on Amazon – search for keyboard heater. Finally a solution for freezing hands!

I disagree with the fact that keeping the temperature down makes for better productivity = not in an office setting. I sit at my desk and freeze and all I am thinking is getting a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and that takes time away from my desk while I meet with other freezing co-workers doing the same. Brrrr….
