Migraine Mayhem

I used to get Migraines every week.  I went to my doctor and we thought we got it narrowed down to stress and caffeine withdrawal.  Because of my three day work week, I was only drinking soda at work, and never at home.  I was only getting migraines on my days off.  I started drinking less soda at work, a little bit at home and started yoga classes.  He also prescribed Immitrex which we quickly realized I was allergic to. I opted to not try another medication and stick with yoga. I must say I rarely got migraines when I did yoga regularly. My insurance offered free classes in their building downtown and since they were at night, parking was free.  I did that for two sessions (spring and fall).  The class times were no longer convenient and to get downtown was a 45 min drive – in rush hour.  I had some yoga DVDs and there is even a Yoga On Demand channel that my cable provider offers for free .  I figured I could be disciplined enough to do it regularly.  I started off doing yoga about 5 days a week at least once a day.  Then one day off turned into two… three etc. Then me and Tony made a deal.  If I did yoga on a given day, he HAD to go to the gym and vice versa.

That worked out all fine and dandy for a while until he started a new job where there was mandatory overtime every day and was too tired to go to the gym and I just got lazy and stopped doing it.  I still do certain poses every once in a while when I feel achy or I’m wound up and need to get ready for bed.  I haven’t gotten many migraines even after I stopped doing the yoga regularly except when it rains lately!  I never really noticed the weather during my migraines before but lately I have been making mental notes of anything different that occurs before I get a migraine since I’m really not all that stressed.  The last three migraines I got all occurred a few hours before it started raining.  I have heard before that barometric pressure changes can trigger migraines but had never really thought much about it.  Now I’m fairly certain that  it is what is causing at least some of my migraines.

A study done in 1981 found that during phase 4 weather migraines increased – that’s weather with low pressure, the passage of a warm front, high temperature and humidity, and often overcast skies. (http://www.relieve-migraine-headache.com/barometric-pressure-headache.html)

That is exactly what we have had the past two days!  Its been in the 90’s, humid as a tropic rain forest and It has been absolutely pouring (I’m talking flash floods) on and off all day!   I have had a migraine since the weather changed but it isn’t as severe as I have gotten in the past.  I have had days where I just lay on the cool bathroom floor in the dark, only moving to vomit. Sexy mental picture huh. I have found that Bayer Quick Release Crystals do help fend off a migraine if  I take them as soon as I feel something coming on.

Bayer Aspirin Pain Reliever Extra-Strength Quick Release Crystals, 20-Count Pouches (Pack of 2)

I have tried all kinds of medicine touted as ” migraine  relief ” but, at least for me, they all work the same as regular medicine on my migraines – which is barely. I bought the Bayer Crystals when they first came out because I had a great coupon and they were on sale.  It honesty tastes terrible but I guess because it is a powder it gets into my system faster.  I had never tried Aspirin before for my migraines so maybe any brand, any form would work but I’m almost afraid to try anything else.  ( I am not being compensated by Bayer in any way , I really use this product.  Your experience may differ) AWW crap  I just remembered!  I was at Walmart today and forgot to pick up some!  I’m completely out!

I have also read some stuff online that suggests that the electricity in the air during a storm can affect the brains of migraine sufferers. It has to do with the fact that some researchers believe that a migraine sufferers brain is more sensitive to changes because it had more electricity going through it.

I can’t change the weather so I’m off to plan something for dinner!  Hope you are having a Terrific Tuesday!
