Growing up on Long Island, we always had big family dinners on Thanksgiving and Christmas. We would alternate which side of the family we ate dinner with for each holiday, and whichever one we didn’t eat dinner with, we would go to for desert. After Tony and I started dating, I broke my family tradition and stayed in Western NY for Thanksgiving and ate with his family. My first year dating him, His mom cooked the Turkey and each family member brought a side. Another time we went to a nice restaurant for a buffet.
After that we never really had a “tradition”. The following year we drove to Long Island and had a quiet meal with my parents at their house. Then next year we couldn’t afford to visit my parents and there was a bit of drama on his side of the family so we opted to go to a local restaurant that was doing a buffet – just the two of us. The food was delicious. The only thing that stunk was there was no leftovers to munch on! The next year we were going to go to Tony’s moms house for Thanksgiving. We were making all the sides, and she was making the turkey. Except we ended up in the ER because Tony had a kidney stones and a bad urinary tract infection. Last year Tony’s mom had just had knee surgery and told all her kids they were on their own, that she couldn’t do the cooking and wasn’t up for a big crowd. Again, we went back to the local restaurant for the buffet, just the two of us.
This year we have no idea what we are doing for thanksgiving. Tony’s mom just had another knee surgery so her house is out and we were thinking of the local place again, but we have also been thinking about cooking a meal here and bringing it over to his moms for them to eat. Money has become an issue this year because I am in a wedding on Long Island the beginning of November so we are flying home for that (plus all the related expenses of being a brides maid).
