#FreeProductReceivedBefore I get into the Evanger’s Review, I want to give you a little background:

We have struggled with what to feed our cats for a long time. Long story short, over the years the kitties have struggled with their weight.  We switched to “Premium” brands of dry food that were for weight management but they were still gaining weight. The vet suggested we switch to wet food. They explained that while in most situations the recommend the premium brands, in our situation, it was more important to get them on wet food so we could increase their water intake, and decrease their carbs and calories.  There were a few brands at the supermarket they told us to stear clear of, but told us Friskies or Purina would probably be ok, we would just have to watch them and make sure it doesnt cause any other problems.

They have been completely on wet food since about March of this year. We still give kibble on occasions where we are going to be gone all day, or overnight so they kitties don’t start tearing the house apart looking for food. We now weight each cat about every other week and I’m proud to say they are all FINALLY loosing weight.  Harley is actually the one we see the biggest difference in.  He no longer has to have his anal glands drained, and he is a LOT more playful!  We also noticed that Jewels feline acne is almost non-existant now.  We were never exactly sure what caused it, but since we switched to wet food, her flare ups are few and far between.

When I see a good sale and/or have coupons, I do buy different brands of cat food just to give them a little variety and the kitties don’t seem to mind.

Kitties Waiting For Food

We have taught all the kitties that they must SIT before they get fed. It took months, but now they all have the hang of it!

Which brings me to my review of Evanger’s Cat food.

When a pet food company offers to send me some sample products to review, Im sure not going to turn them down!

Founded in 1935, Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food Company is the only privately-held, family-owned and operated pet food cannery in the United States.  For over 75 years, the company remains dedicated to improving the health, length, and quality of life of pets through wholesome, hand-packed nutrition.  Yes, that’s right, their products are HAND PACKED!

Made in the USA, in the kitchen of Evanger’s, each farm-fresh food ingredient is not only made and sourced in the United States, but also hand collected daily from human-grade USDA inspected facilities.  90% of ingredients are sourced within 50 miles of the Illinois plant, and are used within 24 hours.  I love that they don’t have ingredients sitting on a shelf in a warehouse for weeks on end!

About the products:

  • Great for dogs with allergies, diabetes, or sensitive stomachs
  • Great for cats with chronic hairballs or urinary tract infections
  • Great for breeding/nursing bitches (promotes colostrum production)
  • No preservatives, harmful additives, wheat, corn, soy, BHA, BHT, or Ethoxyquin
  • Low grain and no grain (gluten-free) formulas offered
  • Most recipes are Kosher
  • Made with human-grade ingredients
  • Made in the USA

The day the package of Evanger’s arrived, we were on our way out as it was delivered, so we brought it inside and left. This is what we came home to:RippedBoxAndBag

The part with the hole had actually been on the side against the floor, so a lot of kibble spilled out. I just turned the box to get the picture.  All three kitties decided to feed themselves dinner while we were gone.  Don’t get my wrong, this box was packed well, my cats are just creative when it comes to finding food – plus it must have smelled pretty darn good for them to know there was food for them in it!

Cans and Dry Food From Evangers

As you can probably guess by the way the tore a hole in the box, and bag of dry food;  they loved the kibble! It was a meat lovers variety that included Rabbit.  The flavors of wet food were a little different than the usual stuff my kitties would eat.  The furbabies didn’t seem to mind the new exciting foods at all. In fact they GOBBLED up each flavor like it was better than the previous one they had tried!

Real Fish From Evangers

How many times have you seen cat food where you can’t really tell what the flavor or ingredients are by looking at it? The above photo is of Evanger’s Catch of The Day wet food.  The fish is hand packed and actually looks like like fish when you open the can! I am so used to seeing mush and other unidentifiable stuff in cat food cans that I was very surprised to see big pieces of REAL fish in the can.

Evanger’s also sent me Pheasant and Whitefish treats, as well as Meat Lovers with Rabbit treats.  We haven’t tried the Meat Lover ones yet, but the Pheasant and Whitefish ones are a big hit!  It is what I use to get Oliver to take his medicine for his Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).  I use a dropper to put the medicine on a saucer, and then I put a few treats on the saucer and he licks it all up! Of course the other kitties smell the treats and come running because they want some too!

Actually, Evanger’s foods area great for cats and dogs that get UTI’s a lot. Struvite crystals, rock-like accretions that scrape sensitive tissues in the urinary tract, are a major cause of inflammation and infection in dogs and cats. The formation of struvite crystals is possible when urine is too alkaline. In meat, we are provided with an acidifier that is natural and promotes overall good health in dogs and cats. So increasing the amount of high quality meat consumed can acidify the urine and help prevent the formation of struvite crystals. Evanger’s offers many canned products whose sole ingredient is USDA meat. Olivers recent UTI was NOT caused by crystals, but I’m glad to know Evanger’s food can help prevent future UTI’s!

I will have to check this out. We went to almost all wet food when my cat developed diabetes. She was strictly on wet food, but the others still got dry. Now we only do grain-free dry food to supplement.

That is so cool! First of all, I didn’t know you could train cats to do anything~ let alone sit, and secondly, the box being torn apart just proves that cats do whatever they want anyway when no one is looking. 🙂
Thanks for the info on the cat food. I’ve never heard of it but the photo of the wet food was impressive!

Harley and Jewel were older when we taught them so it took MONTHS. Oliver was just a kitten and just learned to do what the other two were doing. Now they think any time they sit in the kitchen they should get food. Keeps them from trying to climb all over us as we are putting the food in their bowls!
