Today we will be laying to rest my very special Uncle Peter. He passed away early Monday morning with my mother by his side. Thankfully, there was enough time to give him his last rites before he passed.

About a year ago my Uncle Peter was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.  He smoked for many years and lived in a house with chain smokers. Without getting into too many details, I believe the correct PC term for him would be “Developmentally Challenged”. He also had Neurofibromatosis.  After battling double pneumonia in the hospital, (again) he was moved to a rehab facility a few weeks ago.  The last week he was receiving morphine every eight hours to ease the pain. We knew his time with us was short. He never complained.

God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so he put his arms around you
and whispered,
“Come to Me”

With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you pass away
and although we love you dearly
we could not make you stay.

A Golden heart stopped beating
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best

My Uncle Peter and I. This photo was taken in January.

My uncle has been wonderful to me my whole life. When I was younger and on summer vacation my grandparents would watch me while my parents worked. My Uncle Peter lived with my grandparents and would take me to the town pool so I could go swimming.

My senior year of high school, I attended a different school in the district for afternoon art classes.  If I took the bus I didn’t get home until very late, and would miss any club meetings at my regular school. Uncle Peter would set his alarm (during the day he was sleeping because he worked nights) , pick me up and drive me wherever I needed to go.

Since he was always home during the day, he was also the one who got the phone call when I was being sent home sick from school.  He never complained,  and I didn’t thank him nearly enough.

So Uncle Peter, this is for you.

I love you so much, and wish I would have visited you more often when I was visiting my parents. You didn’t know it, but you were always an inspiration to me. You never let the label’s people put on you stop you from doing what you wanted.  You kept fighting till the very end, and never complained.  You never wanted to bother or inconvenience anyone. Your were so self-less. Until we meet again…

ThanksUnclePeter

Sorry for your loss, my Uncle has just been diagnosed with Esophageal cancer that has spread to the liver and lungs. His doctor said his smoking was a contributing factor. I grew up in a house were both parents smoked (and thankfully quit) thankfully I haven’t had any health effects.

my father is a 17 year esophageal cancer survivor. He always had heartburn but that was before priolsec / prevacid and those types of drugs so he was drinking a bottle of maylox a day. Eventually they realized heartburn lead to GERD which lead to the esophageal cancer. He was also a heavy smoker at the time which they think contributed. He had an experimental surgery in 1996, that didn’t work as planned, but allows him to be alive, and not on any feeding tubes. Prayers for your uncle!

I have tears in my eyes. I used the same poem for my husband’s funeral program – I am very sorry for your loss. May your memories give you peace.

So sorry for the loss of your mother. Often it is the little, simple things that we miss the most after a loved one has passed.
