Moving With Pets

Moving is an especially stressful time for pets – they are used to living in the same conditions and the change of place and environment usually stresses them out. You will need to pay attention to their needs before and during the move to avoid freaking them out. Keep in mind there might be different sets of laws if you’re moving into another country or state around the world. Here are some tips on how to proceed with the move while keeping your pets happy:

1. Read the relevant laws
Depending on the country you’re moving to there might be specific sets of laws that prohibit unusual animals from entering their borders. A lot of countries also have laws that enforce a quarantine on animals that might sometimes last up to six months! Every state in the US has different laws when it comes to pets, however for the most part if they have received the proper vaccines months prior to their travel they will most likely pass without having to go through a quarantine. Some cases might require one however if there were viral outbreaks in the country where the animal has lived. Hawaii for example requires a quarantine to protect itself from rabies outbreaks. The only way this can be avoided is if you vaccinate your pet 120 days in advance, which is the length of the quarantine.

2. Take your pet with you
Handy MovesThis can be a good way of solving your problems since professional movers aren’t allowed to move pets with them. There are some companies which deal especially with that type of transport like Pet Airways, but if you can’t afford or you don’t want to leave your pet’s fate in the hands of someone else you should consider the options. They will be much calmer in your presence and you’ll have an easier time taking care of them since they know they can trust you. Dogs need to be contained and leashed so they don’t cause trouble while most cats can deal with being carried in a pet carrier. If these options are too much for your pet consider consulting your veterinarian about mild sedatives or the equivalent of sleeping pills for pets.

3. Airline pet regulations
If you’re flying you need to know what the rules for pets are before you embark on a journey. You will absolutely need a pet carrier for smaller pets. Some companies may allow you to keep your pet either by your seat or in the luggage compartment, though the majority of them will require you to put your pet in the cargo compartment of the airplane. You will also need to vaccinate your pets according to the regulations of the new country or state and you may need to place the pet in quarantine until its safe.

4. Pet identification
Make sure your pet has an ID on it at all times. Anything can happen and if your pet gets lost during baggage transfer and there is no identification for it and who its owner is… Bad things can happen. Also keep in mind pets in the cargo hold of a plane will have to deal with temperature extremes ranging from extreme cold in the higher end of the troposphere to extreme heat during summers when landing or staying somewhere in hot and humid conditions. Your pet can die during those conditions so if you have an animal that won’t be a problem try to do whatever you can to keep them in the cabin with you instead of alone in the cargo hold.
