Quality of Life Logo Kinoko Gold AHCC

I would say I hate being sick, but I’m pretty sure that that statement is true for everyone.  We don’t get sick days where I work, so if I am sick, I have to take vacation days and try to find someone to cover for me.  Since I work 3 twelve-hour shifts over the weekend it is REALLY hard to find someone who is willing to cover my shift. Heck, I hate my shift, so I totally understand why nobody wants to ever take it.  I get the flu shot most years, I wash my hands and use hand sanitizer – I try to do things to help me stay healthy.  When I first heard of Kinoko Gold AHCC I was intrigued.  It claims to boost your body’s own immune response.  Quality of Life, the manufacturer, offered to send me a bottle to test out for myself.

Kinoko Gold AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) is a mushroom-based nutrient from Japan, which is the most researched specialty immune supplement in the world with more than 80 supporting research studies. AHCC can help turn up the dial on the immune system, to fight off a wide range of threats, including infections, viruses, and the flu.

Potential Improvements in Quality of Life

  • Stronger Immune system: Increased NK Cell, Macrophage, Cytokine and Interleukin activity*
  • Better resistance during seasonal changes*
  • Less fatigue and more energy*
  • Better mood*
  • Better sleep*
  • Optimized white blood cell count*
  • Increased ability of the body to fight off attacks on healthy cells*

Taken during chemotherapy, AHCC:

  • May support the liver’s ability to detoxify*
  • May optimize white blood cell counts*
  • May improve appetite*
  • May alleviate nausea*
  • May maintain energy levels*
  • May support a healthy response to inflammation*

The label says to take 2-6 tablets daily, or as directed by your doctor. I started taking one in the morning with breakfast, and one with dinner. While I was taking the pills, I got the flu shot just to be extra safe. A recent clinical study from Michigan State University shows that AHCC enhances the power of the seasonal flu shot, making it even more effective against this potentially deadly virus.

I wanted to finish the whole bottle before posting the review but about 3/4 of the way through I opted to stop because I am going to be having a lot of health-related tests.  I want them to be able to see what my body is like naturally and then resume any supplements as needed.  I also stopped taking my multivitamin as well for the time being. I ended up in the hospital before Christmas because my heart was going crazy.  The AHCC did not cause my heart problem, I have had ongoing issues with my heart for years. Before I start taking my multivitamin and the AHCC I want to talk to my cardiologist to see what they recommend.

Long story short of my heart: My family has a long history of heart problems (Afib, Heart Attacks before 50, Stents, By-pass, Cardiac Abrasions, etc.). When I was younger (high school and younger) I got EKG’s and EchoCardiograms like they were going out of style.  One of my valves leaks but it is only minor. Occasionally my heart flutters, I notice it, but it goes away quickly. It used to happen 2 or 3 times a month. It never got any worse so my doctors have always had the “wait and see” approach and I have never needed any medication.  It was never a “problem” until the week before Christmas. After 3 days of pretty much constant fluttering and my left arm hurting, I decided it was bad enough to go to the ER.  My BP was sky-high and so was my heart rate. They had to give me medication to stabilize my rhythm.  I was released a few hours later with a prescription and a promise that I would follow-up with my general doctor and find a cardiologist.  After a week on the medication, I saw my regular doctor and my BP was still a little high and my heart rate was a little high as well.  So I found a cardiologist and a 24-hour heart halter monitor and stress test are in my near future.

During the time I was taking the Kinoko Gold AHCC, I didn’t get sick, not even a cold and I felt good.  It could have been a coincidence but taking the Kinoko Gold AHCC certainly wasn’t hurting me in any way.  Actually the blood work they did in the ER showed that all my levels/counts were perfect!
