I was at work Saturday, streaming music on Pandora from my phone to my new iSound Twist Bluetooth Wireless Mobile Speaker (Black).  For my 5 years of service award at work I was able to select a gift out of a catalog and I chose the iSound Speaker.  I only recently got back into listening to music through Pandora. I originally created a few stations back in college so sometimes I like to click on those stations and relive my “youth”.  One song that came up that brought back a lot of memories was  “Page Avenue” by Story of the Year.

Story of the Year has most popularly been referred to as representing the genres post-hardcore,  alternative rock, and punk metal. The band, however, prefers not to be labeled at all, and tends to simply refer to themselves as a “rock band”.  Anyway,  back to “Page Avenue”.  Every time I hear the song, it reminds me of the friends I had when I worked at Old Navy at a mall on Long Island.   We used to park in a three-story parking lot behind the mall (*you will see below that they refer to a three-story parking lot in the song).   We all were seasonal workers, who went away to college, but would return for Winter and Summer breaks to work at the store. All my highschool friends stayed local and I had been the only one who went away.  When I was home on break I didn’t fit in with them anymore. They had their own new friends, and each other – I was now an outsider.

I began hanging out more and more with the Old Navy crew which only deepened the wedge with my former highschool besties.   We often didnt get out of work until midnight because we would help  unload trucks and put out new displays. After work we would go bowling, eat a diner or just drive around.  It didn’t really matter what we did – we always had a blast.   There were many nights that turned into mornings. My mother finally decided as long as I came home before my father got up for work it was ok.  So many times I would go home in the wee hours of the morning, sleep a few hours, only to wake up to a phone call  from one of my friends saying they were outside to hurry up and get ready. We all had cellphones but texting was just starting to catch on so we actually talked to each other a lot.  We would all take off the same day and go to the amusement park together, or concerts together. We even tried to have movie night once a week, and each time a different person got to choose the movie.

After we all graduated college, the Old Navy crew and I sort of lost touch. Two of us moved away, and everyone got “real” jobs, so It  was hard to maintain as close a relationship as we once had.  We are all Facebook friends so we kind of keep in touch I suppose.  We never had a fight or anything like that, we just grew up and grew apart.  I feel like if we were back on Long Island again we could pick up right where we left off, like no time had passed.

WARNING: The lead singer drops the “F” bomb around 2:30 and again at 4:50  in the video below.

Here are the lyrics to “Page Avenue” by Story of the Year:

I still recall every summer night
Like it was yesterday
The time would never end
And my friends were family
Nothing mattered more
Than the loyalty we had
Now I’m a world away from everything we shared

I had something better
Waiting ahead
I try to take control of my heart
I had something better
But I’ll tear it down and I’ll tape it up
By my own design I fall

Bring back the days
Three story parking lot
The air is never dry
As the city falls asleep, days bleed into the night

The tables set the stage
For a life of memories
But I’m a world away from everything

I had something better
Waiting ahead
I try to take control of my heart
I had something better
But I’ll tear it down and I’ll tape it up
By my own design I fall
Apart as time passes by
I fall apart but the memories never die

And I still recall every summer night
It seems like yesterday but I’m still a world away

I had something better
Waiting ahead
I try to take control of my heart
I had something better
But I’ll tear it down and I’ll tape it up
By my own design I fall

To me the song is about cherishing the friendships and memories you have created, but also being able to move on and do what is best for you, personally.

I felt as if I was there with you in your youth. How I envy you the freedom and friendship you experienced. Now days, parents would be too ancious to let you stay out so late at night. I guess the protection of the group worked in your favor.

We weren’t bad kids, I think of all those times we were together, the amount of times we drank, I could count on one hand. And when we did, we always had a designated driver!

As we grow up, move on, get jobs, etc it’s only normal for us to part company (physical). True friendships knows no boundaries. I don’t keep in contact with HS or college buds, except an occasion line dropped on Facebook kind of thing. In my heart, I know we will always be friends to the end. Thanks for getting on the dance floor with us at Monday’s Music Moves Me! Now following you, my friend!
