So our male cat, Harley (the fat one). Is known for stealing treats or any food for that matter that he can find. We have to make sure the counters and tables are spic and span before we go to bed, or we are prone to wake up to hear him jumping in the sink licking dirty dishes, or licking splattered sauce off the stove. We also have to hide his treats or he will push the bag/bottle around trying to figure out how to open them. Yesterday I came home from work and saw a treat bag on the table in the living room. I figured Harley must have done something really cute for Tony to give him a treat so I asked what he did. Apparently Tony had left his boxer drawer ( the top one in the dresser) open enough (by accident) for Harley to climb on top and use his paws to stand the bag up so he could grab it in his mouth. Harley then carried it out to the living room and set it down at Tony’s feet. He didn’t get a treat. Tony put the treats on the table and Harley ignored them.
Until we were ready for bed that is. Tony went to investigate a noise and come back to tell me Harley had gotten into the treats and had almost chewed a hole in the bag. I didn’t ask where he hid the treats that time. Earlier I was checking my email and I could hear Harley’s bell ringing like he was running. I went out to check on him and there he was pushing the treats down the hall. The whole bag had TONS of holes in it from him trying to chew through it. I threw it in the top dresser drawer, made sure it was shut all the way and sat back down at the computer. Harley flicked his tail and walked away in a huff and fell asleep in the window.
Sometimes he will go months without trying to steal treats, other times he tries a few times a day for a week or so. We have an automatic feeder that drops a pre-measured amount of food 3x a day, so it’s not like he is starving. He goes for his yearly vet check ups and now that he is at least maintaining weight, he is healthy.
