After reviewing ökocat Natural Wood Cat Litter back in July, they offered me the chance to review ökocat Natural Paper Litter for free in exchange for a review.

ökocat Natural Paper Litter offers long-lasting odor control in a dust-free formula.  It also has the added benefit of being biodegradable for flushable disposal. ökocat is naturally lightweight and comes in a smart compostable package with an easy carry handle and pour spout.  ökocat Natural Paper Litter ‘s biodegradable material won’t sit in landfills for 100+ years like clay litters do.OkoCat Litter Box

Because this litter is 99.5% Dust Free, it is perfect for cats with respiratory ailments and people with allergies or asthma. The unique pellets also reduce annoying dust and paw prints throughout your home.

Made from 100% paper fiber and free from chemicals, dyes and other synthetics, its specially formulated pellets are firm on the outside and soft on the inside. Absorbing 200% of its weight in liquid, this litter is also fortified with a proprietary Odor Shield™ technology for long-lasting 7-day odor control.

OkoCat Natural Paper Cat Litter In HandOur cats had never used a pellet litter before I so I was not sure how they would adapt. After I poured the litter into the litter box, I added a thin layer of a scoopable natural litter to the top so they would know it was “OK” to use that litter box. Right away one of the cats went #2 but did not feel the need to cover their business. After a few days I realized the cats weren’t using the litter box with the ökocat Natural Paper Dust-Free Litter at all. I scooped some of the pellets into the other 3 litter boxes just so they could start to get used to the feeling of the pellets on their feet, and then put another layer of scoopable litter on top of the ökocat litter.

Every few days I would pour some more of the pellets into the other 3 litter boxes hoping to increase the likelihood of my cats wanting to use the litter box that had almost entirely ökocat Natural Paper Cat Litter in it. ökocat Natural Paper Cat Litter In Litter BoxOnce in a while I would notice some urine in the ökocat litter box (because of the layer of clumping litter on top, I can see the clumps) but every time there has been poop in the litter box  with the ökocat  (which was a rare occurrence) it wasn’t covered at all. It’s as if my cats do not know how to cover their business with that type of litter.

When I would scoop waste out of the litter box with the ökocat in it, I found a lot of the clean litter was getting stuck in my Litter-Lifter Kitty Litter Scoop for Cats because the pellets were wider than the openings in my scoop.  Maybe they make bigger scoops for cat owners who use pellet litter?

Since my cats rarely used this litter box, I  cannot honestly say whether it did a good job or not with eliminating odor. I did like that it wasn’t dusty at all, and that the box itself was lightweight. It does seem that my cats prefer their litter to not be in pellets. We have used non-clumping litter before, and they have adapted to it without a problem.

If you don’t see this brand in your usual pet store, give it some time as this line has just started launching in the USA.  It is available online from Amazon.com as well as a few other online retailers.
