Riding in the car with our pets is usually an exciting and joyous occasion, one in which we’re taking our pets on an adventure together. Road trips, vacations, hiking, swimming, and occasionally a trip to the V-E-T is where we bring our dogs and (obedient) cats.
Something we don’t often think about is: What happens to our pets if there is a car crash? Unfortunately, there are no pet safety standards out there and even well-meaning restraints for pets can do a lot of harm. The thought of them getting launched is terrifying and heartbreaking—it is almost guaranteed to happen during accidents.
However, there are many things that we can do to try and make each car ride safer for our pets. The first step is educating yourselves on the various ways that animals can get injured and then setting them up for a successful outcome. I think all animals should be restrained in cars. My cousin had a therapy dog and was involved in accident. The dog was traumatized and could no longer work.
We don’t have any pets, but these are definitely important tips to keep in mind for pet owners.
