I may be known as the crazy cat lady at work.  If having three furbabies that I treat as family members is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.  Growing up I always loved animals, although my pets were limited to goldfish and a parakeet because my mom wasn’t thrilled with the idea of pets.

I often donate food, supplies and money to the local rescue groups because they are non-profit, and are run entirely by volunteers who open their homes to foster animals.  I wish I was strong enough to foster, but it truly breaks my heart to see the condition that some of these animals are in when they get rescued.  These rescue groups take what the local shelters don’t want – the abused, the sick, the scared.   I look forward to reading the updates of all the animals as they heal both emotionally and physically,  and am often brought to tears when they post pictures of the pets enjoying their life in their forever homes, with their new family once being adopted.

I have never been afraid of dogs, although the first time I met my cousins unaltered adult male pitbull, I was quite nervous.  Tony and I flew in to visit my parents, and it was the first time visiting since my cousin and her pitbull, Zeus had moved in.  When we arrived Zeus was sprawled out in the recliner, upside down, snoring incredibly loud.  We sat and talked and he never woke up.  My cousin let us sleep in her bed, and she slept on the futon in the spare bedroom.  Around dawn the bedroom door flung open and Zeus just stood in the doorway staring at us.  I honestly thought he was going to attack us for being in his moms bed.  Instead that dog pounced on the bed, crawled in between Tony and I, got under the covers and rolled on his back, his eyes pleading for a belly rub.  He was wiggling his butt so hard the bed was shaking. We couldn’t get back to sleep, and it was clear Zeus wanted us to play so we got up and played tug of war with him and his favorite rope toy.  He was our buddy all weekend, following us around and bringing us toys!  When we needed a break his mom would tell him to “Watch” and he would sit and watch out the window, periodically walking through each room of the house checking on things.  He was a total MUSH!  He has since passed away from cancer.

I am a firm believer that we need to punish the owner not the breed when it comes to so-called vicious dogs.  Do accidents happen? Sure! Any breed can snap given the right circumstances.  Small dogs often feel insecure and can become biters if not taken care of properly.  Pitbulls are strong physically and mentally and if you don’t give them a constructive “job” they will take it upon themselves to create one.  In the 5 or so years Zeus was at my parents house, he only had an incident once and that was only after  the neighbors kids kept hitting him with snowballs over the fence.  He took it for a while, and my cousin kept yelling at them to stop that it wasn’t nice, and tried to get Zeus in, but he loved playing in the snow. One kid got really close and hit Zeus with a snowball again.  Zeus snapped, but didn’t bite the kid – it was basically Zeus’s way of warning the kid.  After that the kids weren’t jerks to the dog ever again. Zeus was taught not to hurt people and that  hurting squirrels  and bunnies was really frowned upon, so he usually just chased them out of the yard.

About Susie’s Hope

Susie’s Hope is based on the true story that successfully passed Susie’s Law in North Carolina, which seeks stricter punishment for animal abusers. Susie’s Hope brings to life the inspirational relationship between pit bull attack survivor Donna Lawrence and Susie, a pit bull mix puppy found beaten, burned, and left for dead. Recognizing that neglect and abuse were to blame for the tragic attack that nearly claimed her life 10 months earlier, Donna rescues the battered animal and accepts her as family. Together, they learn to heal, love and forgive as they lead a historic effort to seek justice and protection, not only for Susie, but for all animals.

Susie’s Hope stars Emmanuelle Vaguer (40 Days and 40 Nights), Burgess Jenkins (Remember the Titans) and Andrea Powell (Ender’s Game, The Twilight: Breaking Dawn Saga: Part 2). Susie’s Hope is an incredible story of love, loss, and redemption.

Please take a moment and view the trailer for the movie.

Susie has won the 2014 American Hero Dog from the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards. You can watch her video here.

2014 American Hero Dog

Donna saw the light in Susie’s eyes, even after the hell that she had been through, when it would have been so easy for her to just close her eyes and pass away. Susie has a strong and gentle spirit, and watching this movie, and reading the stories about her, only solidifies that light and love shining through those beautiful brown eyes. I love animals that overcome the odds, they are special indeed.

You can buy Susie’s Hope on Amazon.

I can’t believe someone would be so cruel to a dog. The poor thing wasn’t only beaten but set on fire! This is very disturbing.
But this story also brings hope. I think it’s wonderful that Susie and her new owner were able to help each other in their own grieving process.
Thankfully, this horrible story was able to make things change.
