At our old apartment we didn’t have a garden, the front and back was shared with 3 other apartments. When we moved into our townhouse last summer, I couldn’t wait to start a garden! Under our front livingroom windows, we have a garden that is about 8 feet long and 3 feet wide.  Last year we planted two bushes in the rose family, Lillys, Mexican Heather and some other purple plant. We had to dig up the mexican heather because it didn’t survive the winter.  The other purple plant I wish I had saved the tag for.  It has beatufirul bright green leaves. It seems to spread outward, and not up.  It survived, and stayed green all winter and now the purple buds are starting to bloom. The flowers themselves sort of look like lavender.

This year we added some more lillys,  Iris’s, and  two red dwarf rhododendrons! Last year I had a small tomato plant in a container.  This year I want to get a larger container to grow my tomatoes, and maybe try a few different varieties!  When I do, Im going to try out  Miracle-Gro® Expand ‘n Gro™ Concentrated Planting Mix.

Expand ‘n Gro™ provides your plants with what they need, when they need it, giving you Miracle-Gro results like never before. You’ll get big, beautiful plants and up to 3x the Flowers & Vegetables. Expand ‘n Gro holds up to 50% more water than basic potting soil and will feeds plants for up to 6 months!

This  unique planting mix contains Coir – a lightweight, 100% natural material derived from coconut husk. Compressed coir has a unique cell structure that allows it to expand and retain moisture.  When mixed with your native soil, Expand ‘n Gro™ helps loosen and aerate soil. It creates up to 90% more air space than native soil alone, so moisture and nutrients can reach plant roots. Even if you have heavy, compacted or clay soil in your garden, Expand ‘n Gro™ makes it easier to work. Unlike traditional soil amendments, coconut coir breaks down slowly in the soil, so it improves native soil for multiple years. I know one of the big things with tomatoes is keeping the water level even, too little and they can crack, too much and they get misshapen.   I like that this mix will release the water as my tomatoes need it, and that it will feed them all season!
