When I am making my own sauce, or chili, I never know which canned tomato product would be best for the texture and flavor I am trying to create. I often add one of a few different types, haphazardly without really thinking about how it is going to affect the dish.
Tuttorosso knows I am not the only one with this problem, and did something to help. They are introducing new labels that let you know what flavor the product is best for, and what dishes it will be best in. The labels will also feature cooking tips. They sent me three cans, as well as some additional labels so I could get a feel for how to enhance my recipes and learn some valuable tips along the way.
Some of the tips I already knew, like adding tomato paste will thicken any recipe but some were new to me, like:
- A tomato that cooks down well, use peeled plum tomatoes when fresh flavor is a must.
- Want to add your own spices? Start your base with Tomato Puree. It adds rich tomato flavor.
- Tomato sauce is similar to puree , but flavored with garlic, onion and bell peppers. It makes a great flavor base.
- Crushed tomatoes make a great base for pasta sauces. Use crushed tomato for simmering sauces
To celebrate its heritage dating back to 1929, people are being encouraged to post their cooking inspiration stories on Tuttorosso’s Facebook page — Facebook.com/tuttorossotomato — now through May 7.
Each entrant will receive a Meal-occasion themed digital recipe flip-book with a $1.00/4 coupon, recipes, and cooking tips.
The winner will receive a $250 prize pack that includes a serving plate, sauce ladle, pasta pot set and heirloom wooden spoon, plus $300 to a dinner celebration of the winner’s choosing.
